SHAWANO, WI – As Independence Day approaches, the Shawano American Legion is encouraging younger military veterans to become involved and help continue the organization’s mission of serving fellow veterans and the community.
Kevin Barkow of the Shawano American Legion says many local Legion posts are seeing an aging membership and are looking for the next generation of veterans to step into leadership and volunteer roles.
“We need some 35, 40-year-olds to give us a hand with stuff,” Barkow said. “We need people for our honor guard.”
Barkow says he is among the youngest active members at the Shawano post and hopes more veterans who served in recent decades will consider joining.
The American Legion plays a key role in honoring veterans through military funeral honors, community ceremonies, patriotic events, and youth programs throughout the year. Members also volunteer at local events and work to support veterans and their families.
With the Fourth of July and other community events approaching, Barkow says the need for volunteers is especially important to ensure traditions like the Legion’s Honor Guard continue for future generations.
Veterans interested in learning more about becoming involved with the Shawano American Legion are encouraged to contact their local Legion post for membership information.
