WAUPACA COUNTY, WI – The Waupaca County Board has officially rescinded a plan that would have directed supervisors to donate their meeting compensation to local flood relief efforts after county officials determined the proposal could not be legally implemented.
The board originally approved the idea in April following significant flooding that affected residents across portions of the county. Under the proposal, supervisors would have contributed their $75 per diem payments from a board meeting to assist local flood recovery efforts.
However, county officials later determined there is no existing legal mechanism allowing Waupaca County to mandate or process such donations without first amending county ordinances. As a result, the board was required to revisit the issue.
County Board Chairman James Nygaard said the original motion was motivated by a desire to help residents dealing with the aftermath of the flooding.
After reviewing the legal requirements, supervisors voted unanimously to withdraw the directive. While the county cannot formally direct or process the donations under current ordinances, individual supervisors remain free to donate their compensation to flood relief organizations or recovery efforts on their own.
The action closes the matter for the county board while still allowing elected officials to personally support flood recovery efforts if they choose.
