SHAWANO COUNTY, WI – The Shawano County Literacy Council is looking for more volunteers and financial support as demand for its services continues to grow across the area.
Becky Phipps with the council says the organization is currently in need of additional tutors to help residents improve literacy skills and expand educational opportunities. According to Phipps, the need for tutors is outpacing the number of volunteers currently available.
“We have more students than we do tutors,” Phipps said. “Right now we have 21 tutors and 25 students. We have a waiting list of about eight students.”
Phipps says the council is also searching for new board members after several longtime volunteers recently stepped away from the organization. In addition to volunteers, she says funding remains a major need as the nonprofit continues its outreach and educational programs throughout Shawano County.
“We always need funding,” Phipps said. “We’re a nonprofit and neither tutors nor students pay anything for any of our services.”
