SHAWANO, WI – As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce is preparing for one of the busiest tourism weekends of the year. Michelle Eron, Tourism and Marketing Specialist with the Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce, says the Chamber’s visitor center is fully stocked and ready to welcome travelers looking for things to do around Shawano County.
“The visitor center is fully stocked with lots of brochures and information for people to come in and take and view,” Eron said. “We’ve already seen an uptick of customers coming through, seeing what’s going on for the weekend, seeing what’s going on for the season, taking the visitor guides and brochures and planning their trips.”
Eron says Memorial Day weekend consistently brings a large number of visitors into the region, with weather often playing a major role in how busy the area becomes. She noted that many travelers passing between Wausau and Green Bay regularly stop at the Shawano visitor center, while first-time visitors are often surprised by the variety of information and attractions available in the area.
“I guess it depends on how our season is going with the weather. The weather has a huge factor,” Eron said. “People that are traveling through from the Wausau to the Green Bay area, some of them have been here before and they always know our visitor center is very fully stocked with different visitor guides from the state and the region.”
While organized walking tours will not be offered over the holiday weekend, Eron says visitors can still enjoy a variety of self-guided experiences throughout Shawano County.
“Driving tours they could certainly do on their own. We have self-guided books in the vestibule for like the barn quilts that are popular, but we don’t per se do any types of actual scheduling of tours,” Eron said.
Eron is also encouraging visitors to take advantage of the county’s outdoor recreation opportunities as the summer tourism season begins ramping up. She highlighted Shawano County’s parks, lakes, trails, and fishing opportunities as some of the area’s biggest attractions during the holiday weekend.
“Definitely take advantage of our park system, wonderful park system. All of our lakes are very well kept up and beautiful,” Eron said. “Get some fishing in, get your bike out, pedal it on the Mountain Bay State Trail, maybe even just sit outside in our park system.”
In addition to outdoor recreation, Eron says another popular event during the holiday weekend will be the special Memorial Day flea market hosted by Zurko Promotions at the Shawano County Fairgrounds. The two-day event will run Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
With summer tourism activity beginning to increase across the region, the Chamber expects a steady flow of visitors throughout the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
