SHAWANO, WI – Shawano Area Waterways Management Inc. is encouraging community members to get involved as the organization looks to fill openings on its board of directors ahead of its annual meeting later this month. Volunteer board member Paul Seidenstricker says the group works year-round to protect and improve the waterways throughout the Shawano area.
“The board meets once a month, but there’s a number of months where that doesn’t happen, so it’s usually six to ten times a year,” Seidenstricker said. “We meet for an hour in the evening and we talk about all different kinds of things of importance to the Shawano waterway users.”
According to Seidenstricker, topics discussed by the board include water quality, fishing, invasive plant and animal species, recreation, boating safety, and organizing community events around the waterways. The organization recently sent out notices to its membership and email list looking for volunteers interested in helping guide future efforts.
Seidenstricker said the board recently realized it currently has no representation from the communities of Cecil or Shawano, something members found surprising. While the organization is hopeful to attract people from those communities, he stressed that anyone with an interest in local waterways is welcome.
“We’ll take anybody who has an interest in and commitment to the overall Shawano area on the board,” Seidenstricker said. “You do not have to be a landowner.”
He added that the group values having a variety of perspectives from around the lake, channel, and river communities.
Anyone interested in learning more about Shawano Area Waterways Management or volunteering with the board is encouraged to attend the organization’s annual meeting May 30th at 9 a.m. at Smalley Park, where members will review the group’s accomplishments, finances, and future priorities.
