NORTHEAST WISCONSIN – Wisconsin Department of Transportation has launched a statewide seat belt enforcement campaign ahead of the busy Memorial Day holiday travel weekend.
The campaign, which runs through May 31, is focused on reminding drivers and passengers to buckle up every trip. Officials say law enforcement agencies across Wisconsin will increase patrols and enforcement efforts during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
According to WisDOT, more than 7,600 crashes in Wisconsin last year involved motorists who were not wearing seat belts. Those crashes resulted in 145 deaths and nearly 1,900 injuries statewide.
Transportation officials say wearing a seat belt remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent serious injuries and save lives during a crash.
Drivers can expect to see additional enforcement on highways and local roads throughout the campaign. Authorities say citations may be issued for failing to wear a seat belt or for transporting children who are not properly restrained.
WisDOT is encouraging all drivers and passengers to buckle up before hitting the road for the Memorial Day weekend and throughout the summer travel season.
