SHAWANO, WI
Drivers urged to plan ahead, check 511 Wisconsin for updates
Shawano County residents are navigating a busy construction season, with several major highway projects underway or starting soon, according to Shawano County Highway Commissioner Grant Bystol.
State Highway 29
The most significant work is ongoing along State Highway 29, from County Trunk Highway J to Highline Road. The project involves repairing concrete joints and deteriorated pavement, milling and overlaying asphalt shoulders, and replacing guardrail.
Bystol says crews have completed about 90 percent of the inside passing lane and expect to shift to the outside driving lane around mid-June.
Drivers should also be aware of the following ramp closures:
- County Trunk Highway K ramp — Closes today. Expected to reopen by Memorial Day weekend.
- Westbound ramps at State Highway 47 in Bonduel — Tentatively scheduled to close after Memorial Day. Formal notice will be issued closer to that date.
Drivers looking to access Highway 29 can use the Highway 22 interchange, which has reopened.
State Highway 22
A resurfacing project along State Highway 22 from Shawano to the Oconto County line is scheduled to begin the first week of June.
County Trunk Highway BE
A resurfacing project on County Trunk Highway BE, running from Shawano to the western limits of the Village of Bonduel, is expected to wrap up the first week of June. Bystol said the county is coordinating with WisDOT to ensure BE is open before Highway 22 construction creates any detour impacts in that area.
Memorial Day Travel
Bystol said WisDOT has directed contractors to remove as many lane closures as possible for Memorial Day weekend, though some may remain in place. The County K ramps are expected to be open for the holiday.
The Highway 29 project overall is scheduled for completion in early October.
Bystol reminded drivers to put down their phones in work zones, follow posted signs, and be patient with road crews.
