KING, WI – The Wisconsin Veterans Home at King has unveiled a new battlefield cross memorial, adding a powerful symbol of military sacrifice to the grounds of one of the state’s most storied veterans’ facilities.
The battlefield cross, a tribute traditionally assembled by fellow service members in the field to honor a fallen soldier, carries deep meaning for those who have served. Jeremy Lyon of the Division of Veterans Benefits at the Wisconsin Veterans Home described the origin and significance of the memorial.
“A memorial for a fallen service member created by the other service members, typically on site or for a memorial afterwards as the individuals returned home,” Lyon said.
The memorial is designed to honor veterans across all eras of American military service, not just those who served in a particular war or conflict. Lyon emphasized that the story the battlefield cross tells is one that spans generations.
“This story that we’re telling of the sacrifices made on behalf of Americans by military service members across generations is not tied to a single time period, not tied to a single war or conflict,” Lyon said.
The Wisconsin Veterans Home at King is one of the oldest and largest state-operated veterans homes in the country, serving veterans and their families across Wisconsin. The addition of the battlefield cross memorial continues the Home’s longstanding commitment to honoring the service and sacrifice of those who have worn the uniform.
