Fire danger is very high across much of Wisconsin, prompting the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to suspend burn permits in 43 counties. Locally, the restrictions include Waupaca County, Shawano County, Menominee County, Oconto County and Marinette County.
Officials say dry vegetation, low humidity, warmer temperatures and wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour are creating ideal wildfire conditions.
A small fire in Oconto County earlier this week highlights the risk.
The DNR is urging residents to avoid outdoor burning, including campfires, operate equipment like chainsaws and lawnmowers during cooler parts of the day, secure dragging trailer chains and report any fires immediately by calling 911. Officials say restrictions will remain in place until significant rainfall reduces the fire risk.
