SHAWANO, WI – This year’s sturgeon spawning season at Sturgeon Park in Shawano has brought some unusual patterns, according to Parks and Recreation Director Matt Hendricks.
Hendricks says both staff and visitors have noticed some abnormal conditions, including fluctuations in water temperature that may be impacting fish behavior. He also notes that many of the sturgeon passing through the park may have already spawned by the time they arrive, which could explain changes in activity levels compared to past years.
Another noticeable trend has been the unpredictable timing of sightings, with fish appearing and disappearing throughout the day. Hendricks says that inconsistency has made it difficult for visitors to know when the best viewing opportunities will be.
Flooding has also played a significant role this season, limiting access to some of the park’s most popular viewing areas. Rising water levels at times throughout the week have covered sidewalks and docks, restricting where visitors can safely gather.
As of today, the sidewalk is open for viewing sturgeon.
