SHAWANO, WI – A familiar face on the roads of Shawano is taking her passion for running to one of the biggest stages in the world. Melissa Sheldon is competing in the Boston Marathon, representing not only herself but a community that has watched her dedication grow over the years.
For Sheldon’s daughter, Adayla, seeing her mom reach this moment is nothing short of inspiring. “I think it’s super inspirational, especially to everybody in Shawano and around the area, especially to our kids,” she said. Adayla recalls her mom’s commitment to running stretching back years, even completing half marathons while eight and a half months pregnant.
Sheldon’s journey to Boston is built on consistency, determination, and a deep love for the sport. This year’s race marks her sixth marathon, with past runs including events in Madison, Minneapolis, and the well-known Grandma’s Marathon. Beyond competing, she has also made an impact by serving as a guide for special needs runners in Green Bay.
Adayla says what stands out most is how her mom has balanced it all. “It’s just amazing to see what she can do, especially after having seven kids,” she said. “Being a supportive mom, she still creates time to do what she loves, and that’s running.”
In Shawano, Sheldon has become something of a local fixture. Adayla says many residents recognize her mother from her early morning runs through the city, often waving or honking as they pass by. “It’s really cool to see her running all over Shawano,” she said, adding that even her younger sibling has joined in, riding along in a stroller during some of those runs.
As Sheldon takes part in the Boston Marathon this Monday, her story is resonating far beyond race day, serving as a reminder of perseverance, community pride, and the impact of leading by example.
