SHAWANO, WI – The balance of power on the Wisconsin Supreme Court has shifted following the election of Democrat Chris Taylor, giving democrats a 5-to-2 majority and raising concerns among local Republican leaders.
Colonel Richard Kucksdorf of the Shawano-Menominee Counties Republican Party says the new makeup of the court could have significant long-term impacts. “I’m just concerned for Wisconsin because there’s now five democrat justices on the Supreme Court and two conservatives,” Kucksdorf said. “I’m just concerned with the decisions that they’ll be making.”
Kucksdorf questioned how future rulings will be determined, adding, “Will they be based on law or based on feelings?” He emphasized that in his view, the role of a justice should remain clear. “I believe that the Supreme Court justices’ only function is to interpret the law and their feelings shouldn’t come into it.”
He also expressed concern about what he sees as a broader shift in how courts operate. “It seems like lately they’ve become lawmakers,” Kucksdorf said, pointing to decisions at both the state and national level as examples of that trend.
Kucksdorf says the recent election results highlight the importance of voter engagement, noting that election timing and turnout can play a significant role in outcomes. He added that changes to how and when elections are held could lead to broader participation and a clearer reflection of voter priorities moving forward.
