SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano School District is expecting a mix of cost increases and savings as it updates its employee benefits package for the coming year.
Medical insurance costs are projected to rise about 6%, or roughly $186,000, while dental coverage is expected to increase 5%, adding about $15,000 in costs. Human resources director Janelle Schraufnagel said the district is exploring new vendors for family savings plans in hopes of saving about $100,000.
The district is also switching vision coverage from MetLife to Delta Vision, a move expected to save employees about $3 per month, and plans to make short-term disability coverage optional, which could save the district about $60,000. The employee assistance program will also change providers from ThedaCare to The Standard, saving about $8,200 while maintaining local services.
School board member Karen Houston said the district is fortunate compared to others facing steeper increases. “Districts around us are having significant increases, businesses and districts,” Houston said. “We’re lucky that it’s at 6% for medical plans.”
