SHAWANO, WI – Shoplifting continues to be a concern for local businesses in Shawano, and police are asking residents to help prevent theft. Shawano Police Chief Mike Musolff says the impact of shoplifting goes beyond the stores themselves.
Musolff explained that when retailers experience what’s known as shrinkage, or loss from theft, they often have to raise prices on other items to make up the difference.
He says “Employees and shoppers should contact police if they notice suspicious activity, such as shopping carts filled with unpaid merchandise or individuals attempting to leave a store without paying.”
Musolff noted that one store in particular has been heavily impacted by shoplifting, saying the amount of money stolen from Walmart each year is significant. He called the situation disappointing for the community and stressed that theft affects more than just businesses.
According to Musolff, continued theft could lead to serious consequences, potentially impacting shoppers and local organizations that rely on support from stores like Walmart, including charitable programs and community initiatives.
