SHAWANO, WI – As spring approaches, the Shawano Police Department is reminding residents to take extra precautions to keep their property secure, especially when it comes to firearms. Shawano Police Chief Mike Musolff says officers have recently seen an increase in thefts from vehicles, including cases where guns were taken from inside cars.
Musolff says many of these incidents occur when vehicles are left unlocked, making them an easy target for thieves. He is urging gun owners to remove firearms from their vehicles whenever possible and store them safely inside their homes.
The chief says leaving a gun inside an unattended vehicle can quickly turn a simple theft into a much more serious and dangerous situation.
Musolff also noted that the concern extends beyond the city, saying the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office has reported similar incidents in surrounding areas.
Police say taking simple steps like locking vehicles and securing firearms can help reduce thefts and improve safety for both residents and law enforcement.
