MANAWA, WI – The City of Manawa is taking the next step toward restoring a key community landmark after securing ownership of the property tied to the Manawa Dam. The Manawa Common Council recently approved the purchase of the land where the dam’s powerhouse sits from the private company that previously operated the facility, giving the city full control over the structure and future repairs.
City leaders say the move is an important step as officials work toward rebuilding the dam along the Little Wolf River. The council also approved an agreement with the Town of Little Wolf to jointly oversee the reconstruction project moving forward.
The Manawa Dam failed in July of 2024 after heavy rainfall caused erosion along the north embankment. The failure drained the 180-acre Manawa Millpond, which had long been a popular destination for recreation in the area.
Officials say rebuilding the dam would allow the millpond to return, restoring opportunities for boating, fishing, kayaking, and other outdoor activities that have traditionally drawn residents and visitors to the Manawa area. Planning and reconstruction efforts are expected to continue as the city works toward bringing the millpond back.
