SHAWANO, WI – Jazz music will once again take center stage in Shawano as the annual Shazz Festival returns to Shawano High School.
Shawano High School Jazz Band Director Chris Kent says the event has grown into a staple in the community.
“This will actually be the 17th version of this festival.” Kent said.
Kent says the festival first began in 2010 and has continued to highlight talented student performers while promoting jazz education in the area.
Kent says one key factor in the event’s growth has been the Shawano Jazz Foundation. “The Shawano Jazz foundation was actually founded by a young lady who was a senior in High School.” Kent said she earned a scholarship at the Milwaukee Jazz Festival.
According to Kent, the foundation has since helped support student musicians and expand opportunities for young performers interested in jazz.
The 17th annual Shazz Festival is scheduled to take place March 14 at Shawano High School.
