NORTHEAST WISCONSIN – Favorable ice and water conditions helped deliver a strong start to the sturgeon spearing season on Lake Winnebago, according to fisheries biologist Margaret Stadig.
Stadig says the lake offered excellent conditions for the opener, with solid ice and clear water despite recent warmer temperatures. Those factors played a major role in helping spearers successfully locate fish beneath the surface.
The results reflected those conditions, with more than 600 sturgeon harvested on opening day Saturday and roughly 300 more speared on Sunday. The strong two-day total marks an impressive beginning to the season.
