SHAWANO COUNTY, WI – The historic Novitiate mansion near Gresham could soon see new life under redevelopment plans that would convert the longtime landmark into a hotel and event center. Developers say the 1939 Georgian-style mansion would be renovated to include 13 guest suites, while the surrounding property would host weddings, receptions, corporate retreats, and other gatherings.
The Shawano County Planning, Development and Zoning Committee has approved the proposal, though the full county board must still sign off on a zoning change expected later this month. Project leaders say the work will focus on preserving the building’s historic character while updating it for modern use. Renovations and required permitting could take up to two years, with millions of dollars expected to be invested into the restoration.
Some neighbors have raised concerns about traffic, noise, and the possibility of future development in the area. Developers say they plan to operate responsibly and work with the community to ensure the project fits within the rural setting.
