SHAWANO, WI – Shawano County Veterans Service Officer Paul Pionke has announced his retirement after years of serving local veterans and their families.
Pionke says his decision comes after long reflection and health challenges over the past year. “2025 wasn’t good for me health-wise with my legs,” he said, noting that his physical well-being played a key role in deciding it was time to step away.
Family was also an important factor in the decision, but Pionke says the people he’s worked with will leave the greatest impression. “I’m going to totally miss the friends of the veterans and widows that we encountered and the wonderful support the community and the county gave my wife and I during our time here,” Pionke said.
Pionke’s final day in the position will be March 27. County officials say the search for his successor is already underway, with applications currently being reviewed.
