SHAWANO, WI – Sacred Heart Catholic School in Shawano kicked off Catholic Schools Week by introducing a new tradition that honors graduates whose lives reflect faith, service, and the school’s mission.
The school presented its inaugural Heart Like Christ Distinguished Alumni Awards as part of the celebration, marking more than 135 years of Catholic education in the Shawano community. School leaders say the event highlighted the lasting impact Sacred Heart has on its students and how alumni continue to live out their faith.
This year’s honorees were Sharon Giese, Class of 1957, and Jim Boehm, Class of 1972. Both were recognized during a special school assembly attended by students, staff, parishioners, and family members, bringing the community together in prayer and gratitude.
Giese, a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Parish, has deep roots in the school community. Her children and grandchildren have attended Sacred Heart, and she has supported the parish and school for decades through volunteer work with the Booster Club, church picnics, the Council of Catholic Women, rummage sales, and serving as a principal cook for funeral luncheons. She has also been active with SAM 25, the Catholic Order of Foresters, Catholic Financial Life, and various parish and school committees, including the Finance Council.
Boehm, now a member of St. Raphael Parish in Oshkosh, serves as Executive Director of Father Carr’s Place to Be, a shelter that provides housing, meals, and free medical and dental care for those in need. School leaders say his work reflects the values and faith foundation formed during his years at Sacred Heart.
School officials say the new alumni award tradition gives current students a living example of how a Sacred Heart education shapes individuals who carry their faith into the wider world. The celebration also reinforced the connection between past and present members of the school community.
Sacred Heart extended congratulations to both honorees and plans to continue the tradition in the years ahead.
