LAMARTINE, WI — A 20-year-old man from Bear Creek is facing multiple felony charges following a lengthy police pursuit Sunday in Fond du Lac County.
According to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle in the Town of Lamartine after discovering the license plates did not belong to the car. As the deputy approached, the vehicle fled, prompting a pursuit.
Authorities say the chase lasted approximately 23 minutes and covered roughly 24 miles west of the City of Fond du Lac. Much of the pursuit occurred south of Highway 23, east of Highway 26, and north of County Highway T. During the pursuit, deputies report the driver made multiple U-turns to avoid spike strips and, at times, drove toward deputies in the opposite lane.
The pursuit ended when the vehicle attempted to conceal itself near a farmstead on Forest Avenue Road. The car entered a ditch and came to rest near a pole shed. All five occupants exited the vehicle and were taken into custody without incident.
During a search, deputies reported finding suspected marijuana and alcohol inside the vehicle. Investigators also followed footprints in the snow to a nearby building, where they recovered a bag containing a loaded handgun.
The Bear Creek man faces charges including felony fleeing and eluding, multiple counts of recklessly endangering safety, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia, and multiple traffic violations. Four passengers, all under the age of 21, were cited for underage possession of alcohol, with some also cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.
The incident remains under investigation.
