WAUPACA, WI- A 41-year-old man was taken into custody Monday evening after Waupaca County deputies received reports of an erratic driver swerving across US Highway 10 and nearly striking a guardrail. The call came in around 6:09 p.m. Deputies located the vehicle near County Road A and conducted a traffic stop. According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies immediately detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from the driver and observed additional signs of impairment.
The driver, whose operating privileges had been revoked, was arrested on suspicion of Second-Offense Operating While Intoxicated, Failure to Install an Ignition Interlock Device, and Operating After Revocation.
Officials say the man was so highly intoxicated that he was transported to a hospital for medical care. A preliminary breath test registered a staggering 0.427 blood-alcohol concentration. Because the driver was subject to a 0.02 legal limit from a prior OWI conviction, deputies noted he was operating at more than 21 times his allowable limit.
