SHAWANO COUNTY, WI – Final installation is underway for a new radio communication system at the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department, with all equipment now on site and Motorola crews working through the final implementation stages. Officials say the upgraded system is expected to significantly improve safety and reliability for law enforcement across the county.
Lieutenant Chris Madle told the Shawano County Public Safety Committee that the project nearly faced a four-month delay after a mistake by Motorola was discovered late in the process. Madle said his persistence helped prevent the setback, allowing the project to remain on schedule.
The nearly $445,000 upgrade includes the purchase of 40 new radios along with full system implementation. By renewing its contract early, Shawano County was able to upgrade to newer equipment while saving approximately $148,000 over the life of the agreement.
The new radio system will also enhance interoperability with neighboring counties, including Brown and Outagamie, allowing for more effective communication during multi-agency responses. In addition, the system provides cybersecurity monitoring and GPS tracking, giving dispatchers the ability to locate deputies during foot pursuits or critical incidents.
Officials say the full changeover to the new radio system is expected to be completed by January 16. Once operational, the upgrade is expected to strengthen communication capabilities and improve overall public safety throughout Shawano County.
