SHAWANO COUNTY, WI – As ice fishing season continues across the region, Clark Delzer, a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources warden, is reminding anglers that having a valid fishing license is a requirement before heading onto the ice.
Delzer said anglers must be able to show proof of a fishing license if contacted by a conservation warden. Acceptable forms include a paper copy, a driver’s license, a Go Wild card, or a screenshot of the license on a mobile device. He added that anglers should make sure those items are secured, noting that licenses and phones have accidentally been dropped down fishing holes in the past.
In addition to licensing requirements, Delzer is urging anglers targeting walleye to pay close attention to seasonal fishing regulations. He said Shawano County and Waupaca County both follow a countywide walleye regulation that allows a daily bag limit of three fish, with a maximum size limit of 18 inches.
Delzer emphasized that those regulations do not apply to the Winnebago System waters, which are governed by separate rules. He encourages anglers to review current regulations before heading out to ensure they are fishing legally and responsibly.
