SHAWANO, WI – If you’ve driven through downtown Shawano, you’ve likely noticed the banners lining the light poles, each one honoring a local service member. The banners are part of the Shawano Hometown Heroes Project, a community effort recognizing veterans and active-duty military members with ties to the area.
Heather Kroll, an organizer of the project, says the program is currently open to veterans or active-duty service members who live in, or have previously lived in, the 54166 zip code. Kroll explains that the banners are displayed annually from Memorial Day through Veterans Day, with the goal of filling as many downtown light poles as possible to honor those who have served both the country and the Shawano community.
Organizers say the program continues to expand as interest grows. Sam Sperberg, another organizer, says additional space is now available along Main Street and Lincoln Street, allowing more banners to be installed.
Sperberg adds that future growth could eventually extend the Hometown Heroes banners beyond downtown, potentially reaching areas like Airport Road. He also expressed appreciation for the continued support of the City of Shawano, which has helped make the program possible.
