OCONTO COUNTY, WI- Federal wildlife officials are urging hunters to use caution after two hunting dogs were injured in a wolf encounter in the Town of Mountain on Dec. 30. The agency verified that a wolf attacked and injured the dogs while they were being used for hunting activities in a wolf-occupied area of Oconto County. While incidents involving hunting dogs are not uncommon, officials say they tend to spike during bear training and bear hunting seasons, when dogs are more likely to cross paths with wolf packs in remote forested territory. Similar conflicts have also occurred when dogs pursue other wildlife, including foxes, coyotes, bobcats, rabbits, snowshoe hares, and upland birds.
