SHAWANO, WI – Local officials are reminding dog owners that rabies vaccinations and annual dog licenses are required for all dogs five months of age and older.
According to officials, dogs must receive their initial rabies vaccination from a licensed veterinarian within 30 days of reaching five months old. A booster shot is required one year after the first vaccination.
After the initial booster, dogs must be revaccinated before the rabies certificate expires or within three years of the previous vaccination, depending on the type of vaccine administered.
Officials say proof of a current rabies vaccination is required before a dog license can be issued. Annual licensing helps ensure pets are properly vaccinated and allows communities to quickly identify dogs if they become lost or are involved in a bite incident.
Dog owners with questions about vaccination schedules or licensing requirements are encouraged to contact their local clerk’s office or veterinarian for more information.
