NORTHEAST WISCONSIN – Doctors with ThedaCare are urging parents to be especially cautious when selecting holiday gifts this year, warning that some popular toys can pose serious safety risks to young children.
They say button batteries, small magnets, and older thrifted or vintage toys are among the most dangerous, with button batteries capable of burning internal tissue in less than two hours if swallowed.
Multiple ingested magnets can also be life-threatening, as they can attract to each other inside the body and cause severe internal injuries.
Health experts are encouraging families to choose safer, age-appropriate gifts instead. Books, puzzles, board games, and hands-on creative activities are all recommended as safer options that promote learning and development without the hidden risks.
