SHAWANO, WI- While many area events are being canceled due to dangerously cold temperatures, the Shawano Airport is moving forward with its annual “Flight Before Christmas” celebration on Saturday.
Airport Commission Secretary Doug Engel said the event is fully prepared for the weather and will welcome Santa Claus as scheduled at 2:30 p.m.
“It’s going to be cold, but we’re prepared for it,” Engel said. “Santa will be arriving to a heated hangar, a very nice new one, and we’re going to have warm beverages like hot chocolate and coffee for both adults and kids. There will be multiple warm-up areas, so people shouldn’t have to worry about the cold.”
Engel noted that while frigid temperatures impact people, airplanes operate reliably in cold conditions. “Airplanes fly well in the cold weather,” he said. “The longest trip you’ll have in the cold is from your vehicle to the building.”
He emphasized that the airport will remain open for regular business and that all safety measures are in place to ensure a comfortable, family-friendly experience.
“With all the cancellations happening around us, we wanted folks to know our event is definitely happening,” Engel said. “We’d love to see everyone come out.”
The “Flight Before Christmas” takes place at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Shawano Airport, featuring Santa’s arrival, warm refreshments, and activities inside the new heated hangar.
