KESHENA, WI – A Keshena man has been sentenced to over three years in federal prison following a violent attack on the Menominee Indian Reservation. Federal prosecutors say 53-year-old Darryl Smith pleaded guilty earlier this month to assault resulting in serious bodily injury and was ordered to serve 40 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
According to court records, the assault occurred while Smith, his former girlfriend, and her children were temporarily staying at a shelter on the reservation. An argument escalated, leading Smith to punch the woman in the nose, causing multiple fractures.
At sentencing, the judge cited Smith’s lengthy criminal record and previous convictions for violent offenses as key factors in determining the prison term. Smith will begin serving his federal sentence immediately.
