SHAWANO, WI – With winter bringing longer hours of darkness, Shawano Police Chief Mike Musolff is warning residents that thieves are becoming more active and often look for easy opportunities. Musolff says one of the biggest signs burglars watch for is whether a home appears unoccupied, including unshoveled driveways or mail and packages piling up on the porch.
He adds that homeowners can significantly reduce their risk by keeping exterior lights on, locking all windows and doors, and installing a sturdy deadbolt for added protection. Even small precautions, like asking a neighbor to shovel your driveway or bringing in your mail while you’re away, can make a big difference in deterring potential thieves.
Musolff emphasizes that these steps become especially important when residents are out of town, as simple safety measures can make a home far less appealing to burglars during the winter season.
