SHAWANO, WI – Shawano Police Chief Mike Musolff is reminding residents that vehicle thefts spike every winter as drivers leave their cars running to warm up.
Musolff says these thefts often happen in seconds, describing the scenario as a “crime of opportunity when someone spots an unattended, running vehicle. He urges drivers to lock their vehicles immediately after starting them, even if they’re only stepping away for a moment, calling it one of the simplest ways to avoid becoming a target.
Musolff said an important note on newer vehicles, “Some newer vehicles require the key fob to remain inside before the car can be driven away, many older models lack that safeguard.” He says carrying a spare key and taking a few extra precautions can prevent a costly and frustrating theft during the winter months.
