OCONTO COUNTY, WI – A Gillett Christmas tree grower is receiving statewide recognition this holiday season after two of his balsam firs were chosen for major displays in Madison. The Wisconsin Christmas Tree Producers Association selected trees from Dave Vander Velden’s farm, one destined for the State Capitol Rotunda and the other for placement outside the governor’s residence.
Vander Velden has spent more than 40 years growing Christmas trees, a journey that began unexpectedly after a roofing project turned into a conversation that led him to purchase his first tree farm. He says the 30-foot balsam fir selected for the Capitol stood out for years, noting its full, tight shape and superior genetics compared to the surrounding trees.
The standout tree was originally planted in 2002, and Vander Velden said he always believed it had the potential to be something special.
Vander Velden and his family are expected to attend the Capitol’s official tree-lighting ceremony on December 4th, where his decades of work will be showcased at the center of the state’s holiday celebrations.
