SURING, WI – Dozens of municipalities across Wisconsin, including one in Oconto County, are set to receive major financial support to improve local drinking water systems. The state has awarded more than $282 million through the Safe Drinking Water Loan Program, which funds projects aimed at addressing contaminants such as PFAS and nitrates, upgrading aging infrastructure, and improving long-term water reliability.
As part of the funding package, the village of Suring will receive just under $1.3 million to construct a second water-main river crossing. The project will connect Wells #1 and #3, creating system redundancy and enhancing water service reliability for residents.
The Safe Drinking Water Loan Program has been one of Wisconsin’s most significant tools for improving water quality, providing nearly $1.5 billion in assistance to municipalities since its launch in 1998. State officials say this year’s funding prioritizes small and disadvantaged communities, ensuring they have access to affordable infrastructure upgrades.
Municipalities will begin receiving funds over the next year as approved projects move into construction.
