SHAWANO, WI – With the holiday season approaching and online shopping continuing to climb, Shawano Police Chief Mike Musolff is reminding residents to take extra precautions to keep their packages safe from so-called “porch pirates.”
Musolff says one of the simplest steps homeowners can take is installing a security camera near their front door. He notes that many models are inexpensive, easy to install, and Wi-Fi enabled, giving residents a way to monitor deliveries and deter theft. “So if you have a camera, get a camera out on your front porch,” Musolff said, adding that shoppers can find plenty of options at major retailers without needing to choose a specific brand.
Police say video footage is often one of the quickest ways to help identify suspects when package thefts occur. As deliveries increase in the coming weeks, officers are encouraging residents to track shipments closely, bring packages inside promptly, and consider secure delivery locations when possible.
Musolff says a few simple steps can go a long way in keeping holiday shopping stress-free and keeping thieves from cashing in on unattended packages.
