Communities across Shawano and Clintonville came together Monday to honor the courage, sacrifice, and service of America’s veterans during heartfelt Veterans Day celebrations. The ceremonies paid tribute to those who have served in both wartime and peacetime, reminding attendees of the deep roots of patriotism and sacrifice that continue to shape the nation.
In Clintonville, VFW member Brandon Pszanka reflected on the history of the holiday, which was originally known as Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I. “Veterans Day honors all who have served, in war and in peace, recognizing their lasting impact on our country and communities,” Pszanka said. Tina Wilson, who was born during the Vietnam War, also shared her thoughts, quoting Marine Allen West, saying, “We must never forget why we have and why we need our military. Our armed forces exist solely to ensure our nation is safe so that each and every one of us can sleep soundly at night.” Wilson reminded those gathered that the day is not only about battles fought overseas but also about the personal sacrifices veterans make at home, missing time with family to keep the nation safe.
In Shawano, the County Courthouse served as the backdrop for this year’s ceremony, a location chosen for its powerful symbolism. Retired Army Colonel Richard Kucksdorf, the event’s keynote speaker, noted that generations ago, local draftees reported to the courthouse to begin their military journeys. “It’s a reminder of where so many young men and women’s service began before they answered the call,” Kucksdorf said.
The Shawano ceremony concluded with a solemn bell tribute led by Ted Kirmse of VFW Post 664, honoring more than 30 local veterans who gave their lives in service to the nation. Each name was read aloud, followed by the ringing of a bell, a simple but powerful moment of reflection and gratitude shared by all in attendance.
