SHAWANO, WI – Shawano County Sheriff George Lenzner is warning residents to stay alert as scam calls continue to target people across the area. Lenzner says the department is seeing a rise in phone scams, with criminals impersonating well-known companies and agencies to steal money or personal information.
One recent scam involves a caller claiming to represent We Energies, asking residents to provide their credit card numbers over the phone. Lenzner says once one scam is shut down, another quickly takes its place.
He also notes that one of the most common scams involves impersonators claiming to be from the Social Security Administration, threatening people with legal action over supposed problems with their Social Security number.
Lenzner reminds residents that the Social Security Administration will never call unexpectedly or demand personal information. He encourages everyone to hang up immediately on suspicious calls, report them to authorities, and remind friends and family, especially seniors, to stay cautious.
