Shawano Police officers handled a variety of calls yesterday, including welfare checks, theft, and a report of a weapon discharge.
Police were called to ThedaCare Medical Center around 7:30 Thursday night after a man accidentally shot himself while cleaning a firearm. Authorities say a 44 year old man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. Officers and medical staff responded quickly, and the injury was described as non-life-threatening.
Earlier in the day, police investigated a burglary at a home on West Picnic Street. The resident reported that jewelry and an Xbox gaming console had been stolen while she was away overnight in mid-October. The case remains under investigation.
Officers also responded to Walmart twice Thursday — once for a suspicious person reportedly wandering the store for hours, and again for a shoplifting complaint involving a stolen sound bar. Police identified a suspect vehicle and are following up on leads.
Later that night, just after midnight, Shawano officers were involved in a short vehicle pursuit near East Green Bay Street and North Airport Drive. A black Nissan 350Z fled from officers but was last seen leaving the city limits.
Other calls included multiple welfare checks, a found knife on East Green Bay Street, and several general assists and standby calls throughout the day.
It was a steady Thursday for Clintonville officers, with multiple business checks conducted throughout the early morning hours along South and North Main Street to ensure local properties were secure.
Around 4:20 a.m., police assisted another agency with mutual aid on West First Street. Later in the morning, an ambulance call was handled on Industrial Avenue, followed by an SRO presentation at a local school on West Green Tree Road.
Officers provided an escort around noon on South Clinton Avenue and conducted several traffic stops throughout the afternoon and evening — including along Highway 156 and North Main Street.
Around 7:30 p.m., police responded to a minor vehicle crash on West Madison Street. No serious injuries were reported.
The day wrapped up with a citizen assist on South Main Street and a noise complaint on Stewart Street late Thursday night.
The Shawano County Sheriff’s Office logged 32 calls for service on Thursday.
Deputies made several warrant arrests throughout the day, including early-morning pickups in Marathon County, Bowler, and Mattoon. One arrest involved a probation and parole warrant.
A property damage complaint was filed in Bowler after loose cattle reportedly tore up a neighbor’s yard. Deputies also responded to several traffic hazards along Highway 29 — including deer-related debris near exit 234 and stalled vehicles causing slowdowns.
A traffic stop in Wittenberg resulted in a citation for failing to yield to a school bus with its stop arm extended, and another driver was cited for crossing the centerline on County Trunk M.
Deputies investigated a gun-related incident in Shawano Thursday night. A man accidentally discharged his firearm while cleaning it, injuring his leg. He was taken for medical treatment.
Elsewhere, deputies handled a reckless driving report on County Trunk N near Birnamwood, several animal complaints — including a deer that had to be put down — and a harassment report in Pulaski involving repeated unwanted calls.
The Stockbridge-Munsee Police Department assisted on multiple calls, including a trespassing report in Middle Village and a follow-up related to a bail-jumping investigation in Mattoon.
