SHAWANO, WI – With trick-or-treating underway, Shawano Police Chief Mike Musolff is reminding parents to make candy safety a top priority once the festivities wrap up.
Musolff advises families to carefully inspect all treats before children eat them, paying special attention to anything that looks suspicious, is unwrapped, or appears to have been packaged by hand. “You’re always going to look to see if there’s any open candy or any items that are packaged by the person that gave it out,” Musolff said.
He noted that while Shawano has been fortunate to avoid serious issues in recent years, parents should still remain vigilant. “We’ve been pretty fortunate in Shawano to not have any substantial issues like that, but that does not mean we should be complacent,” Musolff added.
The police chief also encourages parents to walk with their children during trick-or-treating and keep an eye on what’s being handed out, especially if kids snack on candy along the way.
