SHAWANO, WI – Shawano County supervisors are preparing to vote on a new leave of absence policy aimed at supporting employees who don’t qualify for Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) benefits. The proposal will go before the County Board on October 22.
If approved, the policy would allow eligible county employees to take unpaid time off when facing serious personal or family challenges, including health issues, caregiving responsibilities, or the death of a loved one. Under the plan, workers could take up to eight weeks for their own illness, 80 hours to care for a sick family member, and two weeks for bereavement.
Interim Administrative Director Julie Hasser says the policy is already making a real difference. She noted one county employee was recently able to keep his position while recovering from significant health concerns, a situation that inspired renewed focus on flexibility and compassion in the workplace.
County leaders say the proposed change underscores their commitment to supporting employees through life’s most difficult moments, while ensuring the county continues to operate smoothly and fairly for all.
