SHAWANO, WI – Local health officials say the recent measles outbreak that affected parts of northeast Wisconsin has officially been contained. Nick Mau, Health Officer for the Shawano-Menominee Counties Health Department, confirmed that the last active case is now cleared. “We have been told as of last week that the final case of those 36 has been out of isolation, so we don’t see any new cases popping up,” Mau said.
The outbreak, which originated in Oconto County, prompted close monitoring across neighboring regions, including Shawano and Menominee counties.
While measles concerns have eased, Mau said health officials are still keeping a close eye on avian influenza, also known as bird flu. “The bird flu, or the highly pathogenic avian influenza, it’s not quite gone away yet,” Mau noted. “Wisconsin milk, so dairy, continues to be tested, and so far there hasn’t been any bird flu detected in milk samples.”
Mau added that surveillance efforts will continue through the fall to help ensure both public health and food safety across the region.
