PORTAGE COUNTY, WI- The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has confirmed a case of chronic wasting disease (CWD) at a deer farm in Portage County. The diagnosis was verified by the National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames, Iowa.
Officials say the positive result came from a 3-year-old buck. The farm is now under quarantine, where it will remain as DATCP and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) conduct a full investigation to determine potential exposure and trace movements connected to the herd.
CWD is a fatal neurological disease that affects deer, elk, and moose. It’s caused by an abnormal protein known as a prion, which attacks the animal’s nervous system.
DATCP oversees the state’s deer farm regulations, including registration, recordkeeping, disease testing, and movement permits, as part of ongoing efforts to monitor and control the spread of CWD in Wisconsin.
