SHAWANO, WI- Wolf River Hydropower has been directed by federal regulators to begin drawing down the water level on the Wolf River between the Balsam Row dam and Keshena. The plan could lower the river by as much as 14 feet to ensure the dam can safely pass water downstream through the winter months. Residents say they worry the project will disrupt their way of life, from boating and ice fishing to the natural wildlife along the shoreline. Officials say environmental factors were considered, but neighbors insist that more needs to be done to protect the river. The company says the water level is expected to return to normal by next boating season, though residents remain cautious about what the future holds.
