SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano Police Department is investigating two separate graffiti incidents at Walmart, one outside in the parking lot and another inside the store.
Police Chief Mike Musolff says the first case involved someone spray painting a personal message on the pavement next to a vehicle. “There was damage to the parking lot, not so nice things spray painted about an individual on the parking lot,” Musolff said. “We’re still trying to figure out who did that.” He confirmed the vandalism wasn’t political, but personally motivated, and the cleanup came at a cost. “It was quite extensively expensive to get cleaned up,” he added. A separate case inside the store involved kids who spray painted in an aisle. “They actually grabbed a can of spray paint and spray painted an aisle,” Musolff said. “We know who those kids are, so we’re taking care of that.” Musolff says these cases are a reminder that vandalism is not a harmless act. “The message is damaging property is not going to be tolerated in Shawano,” he said. “We will pursue charges and restitution for those that do the damage.”
He added that the cost of vandalism eventually comes back to the community. “Even if it’s at a business like Walmart, you’re still going to have a significant cost they have to pay for, and that comes back to customers eventually down the road because all the prices get increased.”
