OCONTO COUNTY, WI – Health officials say the measles outbreak in Oconto County remains at 36 confirmed cases as of Tuesday, with no new infections reported.
The outbreak, which began in mid-July, continues to be the only active measles outbreak in Wisconsin. All documented cases so far have been among unvaccinated individuals, underscoring health officials’ ongoing calls for residents to review their vaccination status.
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus that spreads through coughing and sneezing. Symptoms typically include high fever, cough, runny nose, and a red rash that can spread across the body. Complications can include pneumonia and, in severe cases, death — though no fatalities have been reported in the Oconto County outbreak.
Public health officials are urging parents to ensure children are up to date on the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine and for adults to speak with their healthcare providers if they are unsure of their immunity status.
