SHAWANO, WI – This year’s Shawano County Historical Society cemetery tour will carry extra meaning, as organizers plan a special tribute to Vietnam veterans who served, sacrificed, and in some cases, never made it home.
The tour takes place Saturday at 3 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery and is open to the public. Visitors will hear firsthand recollections from Vietnam veterans, men now in their 70s and 80s, who continue to walk among us and share their powerful stories.
A highlight of this year’s event will be the recognition of Larry, a Vietnam veteran being honored posthumously. With his family present, Larry will be remembered alongside fellow soldiers Smokey, Bruce, and Butch in a ceremony designed to ensure their sacrifice is never forgotten. There will be a bell that will be rung 14 times for the 14 Shawano County men killed in action.
Organizers say the program is more than a history lesson; it is an opportunity for the entire community to come together, reflect, and remember. “We have people from the Vietnam War still walking with us today,” Organizer Tom Aumann noted, underscoring the importance of connecting past and present through living testimony.
The Historical Society encourages residents to attend the tour, listen to the stories, and join in honoring the men and women whose service left an enduring mark on Shawano County and the nation.
