SHAWANO, WI – A longtime tradition in Shawano cross country has a new name, honoring the man who helped shape it. The annual Shawano Hawk Invite is now officially the Steve Stomberg Invite, a tribute to Head Cross Country Coach Steve Stomberg’s decades of leadership and dedication.
Stomberg was recognized during a special ceremony on Saturday, where he received the honor in front of athletes, families, and fans gathered on the football field just before the awards presentation. The moment underscored the lasting impact he has made on the program and the community.
For Stomberg, it’s always been about the athletes. “Well, I just want these kids to continue going out there and bleeding themselves and giving them a chance to try,” he said, reflecting on what inspires him year after year. His focus on effort and opportunity has guided generations of Shawano runners.
But beyond the competition, Stomberg has always emphasized connection. “It’s a family sport and you make sure that everybody’s welcome and that’s it. And I just want everybody to be all together and having fun,” he added. That philosophy has helped build a culture of support and camaraderie among the athletes and their families.
With the event now carrying his name, the Steve Stomberg Invite will continue to inspire future runners.
