Northeast Wisconsin – Trains have been moving steadily across Wisconsin in recent months, and law enforcement says that makes rail safety more important than ever.
Sergeant Jon Pedersen with the Wisconsin State Patrol is reminding both drivers and pedestrians to stay alert near railroad crossings. “A simple rule is just never walk or ride around any lowered crossing gates. Don’t walk on any railroad tracks,” Pedersen said.
He noted that too many crashes happen when drivers take chances at crossings or when people walk where they shouldn’t. Railroads also have an added tool to help hold violators accountable. “They’ll set up cameras and support it, and they use that as evidence when they go to court because they’ll write citations,” Pederson explained.
Officials remind everyone to always expect a train at every crossing, never go around lowered gates, and use the blue emergency sign or call 911 if there’s ever a problem on the tracks.
The Wisconsin State Patrol says following these simple steps can prevent tragedies and keep rail traffic moving safely.
