SHAWANO, WI – Two Shawano congregations are moving toward becoming one faith community. Peace United Church of Christ and First Presbyterian Church announced plans to merge, with the process expected to be finalized by early next year.
Council President Bob Smits of Peace UCC said leaders from both churches have spent months discussing shared challenges, including declining attendance and aging memberships. As part of the merger, both congregations have agreed to sell their current buildings and search for a new space to worship together.
Smits said the merger represents a fresh start, including adopting a new name and calling a permanent pastor once the transition is complete. For now, Peace UCC continues services with an interim pastor, while members of First Presbyterian are helping lead worship each Sunday.
